The most widely available models of speed camera detector to buy these days are GPS based models which are completely legal and will remain so.

In November 2006 the Road Safety Bill was passed to ban devices that "detect and interfere with the proper operation of police equipment". This legislation is designed to outlaw laser jammers and laser diffusers (different to detectors) and may well include radar detectors.

We are still waiting to see if the interpretation of this law will include laser detectors or not, but on most models laser detection can either be unplugged, switched off or de-activated with a firmware update should the law change for the worse.

No date has currently been set for the implementation of this part of the Road Safety Bill.
