Bluetooth
A form of wireless communication for things like mobile phones to send and receive data to other devices such as satellite navigation systems.
Co-Pilot
A common software package used by manufacturers to provide an interface to the mapping on their satellite navigation products.
Galileo
A European alternative under development to the current GPS system that is owned and controlled by the USA.
GPS
Global Positioning System. A network of satellites circling the globe in space which transmit radio signals to accurately determine your location in time and space which can then be used for guidance.
IPX6
The international standard for a device to be weather proof / waterproof for use outdoors.
MRE
Stands for Major Roads or Europe. Some products offer street level data of the UK and the Major Roads of Europe for basic navigation abroad.
NAVTEQ
Provider of digital mapping data, an American company.
Ordnance Survey
An organisation that produces topographical maps of the UK.
POIs
Points of interest. Other information that you can get in maps such as the location of petrol stations, hotels and restaurants etc. Most demanded POIs are those of speed camera locations.
Sat Nav
Abbreviated term for Satellite Navigation.
Satellite Navigation
Guidance system based on comparing your location as determined by the GPS network of satellites with that of your intended destination.
SD Card
Stands for Secure Digital Card. A small portable memory card used to store mapping data. Is universally compatible and can also be used in other devices such as cameras to store photos and MP3 players to store music.
SIRF III
A high quality satellite signal receiver.
